Multi-Genre Essay

 

Please find a poem or song that addresses the theme of losing innocence and growing up. Bring it in to class with you; you will need it to write the next essay. Please be sure to pick a song or poem that has some depth to it. Ooh, baby, baby, baby, I love you may not be enough to sustain writing an entire literary criticism essay. Your song/poem should address growing up.

 

You will write a comparative essay in which you will analyze the monologue and one song/poem of your choice that is thematically linked.

 

GUIDELINES:

      Use specific evidence from BOTH texts to establish a controlling idea (thesis) about how attitude influences how one copes with lifes demands. HINT: When referring to the pieces, it might be a good idea to focus your essay on a close reading of one specific key passage instead of using isolated examples from throughout the text.

      Use specific and relevant evidence from both passages to develop your thesis.

      Show how the author uses specific literary elements (symbolism, irony, repetition, etc.) to portray how attitude influences how one copes with lifes demands.

      Organize your ideas in a coherent way.

      Although there are several ways to approach this essay, the following are two basic and simple ways to structure the essay that most people seem to find easy to follow.

One Way: Five paragraph Model

 

I INCLUDE:

II BODY : Discuss how analyze the monologue addresses how one loses ones innocence and grows up. Use specific examples from the text (at least three quotes) and discuss how the author uses certain literary elements (at least three) to prove his points.

 

III BODY : Discuss how your song/poem addresses one loses one innocence and grows up. Use specific examples from the text (at least three examples) and discuss how the author uses certain literary elements (at least three) to prove his points.

 

IV BODY: Compare and contrast the two works. Use specific examples from the text (at least three examples) and discuss how the authors use certain literary elements to prove their points.

 

V CONCLUSION-

      Restate your thesis.

      Sum up how you proved your thesis.

Second Way: Two longer body paragraphs.

III BODY : Contrast how your song/poem addresses the idea of losing ones innocence and grows up. Discuss specifically comparing and contrasting with the detailed explanation you gave of the first work. Use specific examples from the texts (at least three examples) and discuss how the author uses certain literary elements (at least three) to prove his points.
