Each member of the group should be assigned a character to be during the trial, but all should investigate evidence from the text to write their statement. Make sure that you rely only on evidence provided in the book.

I.                    As a group, discuss the events leading up to the murder as you understand and interpret them.

II.                 Each of you is a member of the jury and should write a statement that illustrates what you already know about the case, the defendant, and the witnesses. [You will use this statement later to deliberate the verdict along with what you hear at the trial.]

III.               Can you be neutral, objective? Explain.

Your group has been assigned a task: Defendant & Star Witness: Meursault

 

Your group’s task is to voice what Meursault doesn’t during his trial. You would like to be let out of prison! Members of this group may alternate presenting during the trial or have one designated Meursault.

 

I.                    Write a statement of your defense. What made you kill the Arab? You may also bring in evidence of your philosophy (existentialism) as a means to defend yourself.

II.                 After your group has completed this task, work with the Defense Team to make your case.
