Greek Theater Definitions

 

1.      Tragic Hero: a character of high birth, neither totally good or bad; experiences downfall

2.      Dramatic irony: the audience knows something the character doesn’t

3.      Deus ex machine: an unexpected, miraculous ending

4.      Nemesis: fate cannot be escaped

5.      Hubris: arrogance/pride that causes hero’s transgression against gods

6.      Hamartia: a tragic flaw, weakness of character or error in judgment that causes downfall

7.      Catharsis: purgation of emotion of pity / fear which leaves the viewer relieved & elated

8.      Peripetieia: reversal of fortune
