TIPS for Essay Writing

 

·       Use present tense!

·       No “I” and no “You”

·       No reference to the lens/quote after you have stated the firs time in the intro

·       Do not use the word “quote” ever

·       It’s okay to cut stuff. Don’t love your writing so much that you repeat yourself

·       It’s okay to break down your longer paragraphs into more paragraphs. The outline was just a guide, not a law

·       Underline/italicize the title of the novel

·       Be sure to use direct quotes and some paraphrasing; you may opt to use only direct quote

·       Avoid to that extra space between paragraphs

·       Cite page numbers: “Kill the beast, cut its throat” (35).

·       If a quote is 5 lines or more, single space the quote/indent it 2x

·       We need to know who is speaking or what is being is described, so please set up your quote/evidence!

·       Don’t provide long evidence and short analysis. Equal time, please!

·       Good title = gets lollipop! Title = position

·       Please double space your essay.

·       Read your essay aloud to proofread!
