"Life's always been a business of working hard and fighting the cold... The earth's always been a lonely place, millions of miles from the next planet. And no matter how long the human race might have lived, the end would have come some night. Those things don't matter. What matters is that life is good. It has a lovely texture, like some thick fur of the petals of flowers--you've never seen those, but you know our ice-flowers--or like the texture of flames, never twice the same. It makes everything else worthwhile. And that's as true for the last man as the first." -- Pa in Fritz Leiber's "A Pail of Air"

In case you're hungry.... just heard this:

    HW #18

    HW #17

Reflect and come up with a paper topic that interests you. Either write about Zoline's story alone or about two works we have read this semester. Pick a topic and formulate an interesting and specific thesis (5 points) and then develop a detailed outline (10 points).
  • Mid Term Essay Assignment

    HW #16

Finish "The Heat Death of the Universe" and annotate like a madman.

    HW #15

Re read and re annotate in a different color.

    HW #14 (15 points @ 5 per term)

Please be prepared with the research terms you were assigned. You will not hand in anything, but you will "teach" the class your terms and they will annotate that knowledge into the short story. Absent folks: Megan 6/36/34, Eli 11/40/16, Kitman 19/48/21, Emily 20/49/11 [btw we used legal sized paper for the project not the huge one]...
  • Zoline Research Terms

    HW #13

Finish the novel! Quiz on 10-epilogue! MAke note of evidence to help your group work from class.

    HW #9

Revise and polish your excerpt and submit the final draft to turnitin. Class ID 14837810 and PW gokturk. I will only grade from turnitin. Please submit it by Friday 6 PM.

    HW #8

Watch Black Mirror's "White Christmas" and we will have a "quiz."

    HW #7

Read "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" and there will be a quiz.

    HW #6

Reflect on the article "2045" and the videos we've watched so far. Start planning the setting of your excerpt. It is not due for a while, but I find it helpful to start a paper with bullets and questions I would like to incorporate into my fiction. For example, perhaps I would like my setting to include a world where the aging process has been reversed thanks to the telomerase experiments. Maybe my house will have Corning's interactive glass, but it is used to monitor the character.

    HW #5

Read 2045: The Year Man Becomes Immortal. Annotate for intriguing or disturbing ideas/facts.

    HW #4

Read "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury. Pay careful to attention to all the literary techniques Bradbury uses to develop his theme.
  • Leonard Nimoy read "There Will Come Soft Rains"

    HW #3

Read "A Pail of Air" and expect a reading quiz. Annotate and highlight for theme evidence, course motifs, characters, etc.

    HW #2

Read "Adam and No Eve" (now available from Xerox -- on the bench next to my desk in English office) and annotate. Highlight passages that seem important. There will be a reading quiz.

    HW #1 Welcome!

On the piece of blank computer paper, choose a point in James Thurber's "The Last Flower" to CHANGE the cycle. SAVE THE WORLD! Where would you do something differently? Choose the number to delete and replace with yours. DRAW 1-5 new boxes (in the style of Thurber's simple line drawings) in which you change the course of events for the better. Then, underneath, write a well developed paragraph that explains how your vision could work and why it makes a better future. REmind101: message @eow6 to 81010.
