Employ effort

Possess a positive attitude, please!

Grading

Quizzes = (Reading, Vocabulary, Unit Tests, etc.)

  • This usually takes the place of written HW for the readings.
  • You will have a reading quiz at the START of class; latecomers are not guaranteed a make up quiz.
  • You have two days to make up a quiz if you were absent. See the absence policy.
  • 2-5 points per question
  • Lowest grade is dropped

Projects = (Long Term Assignments: essays, presentations, etc.)

·        Late projects lose 5 points a day and may not be accepted after two weeks.

·        Projects receive letter grades and generally are worth 100-200 points.

·        Most projects are submitted to turnitin.com.

·        Extra credit is given to students who utilize the Writing Center. Be sure to have your first draft signed with a time in and time out; hand in this draft with other materials requested. There should be clear revisions for extra credit.

·        I will email you reminders at times from turnitin.com, so be sure you register with an address you use.

Homework & Class Work = (Short Term Assignments: observations, journals, literary circles, groupwork, short written assignments, etc.)

  • Unless otherwise notes, HW is worth 10 points.  √+ (9-10 pts), √ (7-8 pts), √- (5-6 pts), inc (1-4)
  • HW is due the class session after it was assigned unless otherwise noted. It is collected at the START of class.
  • Check out the board! There’s an assignment! Checkthesite.com, too!

·        Late homework will either not be accepted or will lose points. [Late is anything after the start of the class.]

Discussion, Work Ethic, & Citizenship = (see rubrics for the specifics)

  • Attendance and punctuality do figure in your average!
  • Being prepared, taking notes, listening, etc. are all part of the grade.
  • Holistically: a letter grade is given each marking period out of 100.

·        Spot Check Daily: on random days, a discussion grade (1-4 points) is given. This grade is non-negotiable and is based on the 1-4 Discussion Rubric. You will not know what day is a discussion grade day, so always participate! This also applies to a Writing Lab grade.

Extra Credit:

If you have completed all of the required course work, exhibited your best effort, and attended class faithfully, there may opportunities for extra credit.

Absences (Please see the “Absence Contract” for more details)

·        At all costs, avoid being absent on important days such as peer edit days and due dates.

·        You need to be present to participate. This is not a correspondence course.

·        If you have more than 4 absences (per quarter) for which you did not make up work/time, you will receive an F* for the quarter. Students who abuse the make up time procedure will still receive an F*.  Three or more cuts per semester is also an F.

If you are absent, please understand that it is YOUR responsibility to:

·        Contact a friend

·        Check www.checkthesite.com (or www.surfturk.com)

·        Make up the work

·        NOT expect one-on-one instructional time during class time

·        Schedule make up time

·        Make up the quiz if there was one within two days of your return to school; otherwise, you will get a NMU (Not Made Up) = 0

·        Keep up to date with the readings, assignments, etc.

Preparedness

·        It is imperative that you understand that you must be prepared on a daily basis.

·        Checkthesite.com every night before returning to class.

·        Check the white board (right hand side) when in the classroom. HW is always posted there.

ORPs

·        You will receive FIVE out-of-room passes (ORPs) per marking period.

·        Should you decide to use them, just ask and I will sign you out for that date [you have approximately 5 minutes to attend to your business whatever that is]; however, if you do not use them, they are worth 5 points each, to be averaged into your project average.

·        Being late [arriving to class after the bell rings] will also lose you an ORP and rack up time in the tank, so be on time!

The Cell Phone Intervention Program

·  Cell phones should never be seen or heard.

·  Cell phones must be put away. Any cell phones not put away will be confiscated.

·  Texting is rude and distracting. Period. Don’t do it.

·  There will be no negotiations. Students who don’t follow this rule will face a series of intervention tactics.  Students will also lose ORPs.

Gokturk’s Definition of Late: Late is arriving any time AFTER the bell rings.

·        Three “Lates” = one hour in the tank.

·        Lateness impacts your grade.

·        Each “Late” loses you an ORP.

Please do not wait until it’s too late!  See me for extra help during 4-2 ( bring your lunch!), before school ( I get to school by 7:30), or by appointment.  I look forward to this semester with you. Let’s have a great semester!
