HW #30

Complete your Post-Course Reflection, type up your favorite 3 journal entries, and work on revising your essays. Make sure all polished work is on your U Drive. If you email yourself your work, send as attachments as work pasted in the body of an email loses its formatting and becomes a pain to deal with for the publication. Next class, I will introduce you to the Desktop Publishing so make sure that you have polished work to use.

Send/save yourself the illustrations for each work. Remember, you can use photos, Internet images, your own artwork, whatever. Just be sure that you have access to it from yoru school U drive. All photos and essays must be in your U Drive, so start saving from an email as soon as you get in to the lab (where we'll be meeting for the rest of the term).

What's your style? Have a flavor ready. I strongly urge you to have at least one magazine with you to emulate, not an online version.

HW #29

Revise your process essay and compelte the Writer's Response. Packet: Writer REsponse, 1 double spaced final draft, all peer edits, 1 rough.

ALSO: Please make sure you have ALL your work from this semester on the computer: Significant Moment, Bio of Influence, Outside Reading Writings, Multi-Genre, in class process assignment, Process Essay, any favorite writings from other classes this year [poetry/short stories/essays, and bring your journal entries from the 1st MP.

Please bring your Models for Writers and The Stranger, too.

Also begin looking and emailing yourself photos that help illustrate your writing for your portfolio magazine. If you have only a photo, we can scan it in class. FYI: since your portfolio will look like a magazine, you may bring in a "model" to emulate. For instance, if you love Rolling Stone, bring it in! Or, Seventeen. Or, whatever.

HW #28

You worked alone or with a partner during class to complete the warm up exercise -- a step by step with POV. That was your intro to subtext. 1. Now, choose your essay topic. Over two class periods, you will write an approximately 1000 word process analysis (either informational or directional) that clearly defines and develops steps. 2. Outline the steps (list the order or create a flowchart). 3. Clearly explain what your subtext or thesis is. In other words, your essay will use the process to reveal a truth. Your essay will be extremely dull (only a technical piece) if you don't have subtext.

Student Samples -- Proof that you can write about practically anything!:

  • Tonsil Hockey 101
  • How To Take an Ap Latin Exam
  • How to Get Ready for School, An Excerpt from an Alien Guide
  • What Taking the SATs is Really
  • Plastic Bottle Weapon
  • So You Want To Be On Page 6
  • How to Change a Baby's Diaper

    HW #24

Reread and/or think about what we read in Line in class. How does this text fit into the absurd/existential genre? What is each character's philosophy? How does each spend the time? What choices does each make? What is the line for?

    HW #23

What to expect for the Outside Reading Test

There will be two class periods allotted to write about your outside reading book. Bring your active reading notes and book (it's open book after all, and you will be a clear disadvantage if you forget it).

You will be asked to write several different types of responses. You will be graded on: clarity (organization, logic, fluidity of prose), development (how thoroughly you illustrate your points using specifics from the text and appropriate analysis/insight), and effort. This is your chance to prove that you read, and that you read with purpose.

    1) A review (opinion on the book) using specifics from the text. Whether you liked the book, hated, had mixed feelings, consider what three reasons you could give to support that position. You will develop each "reason" with specifics from the text.

2)Analyze how the subject is characterized. Consider what he/she thinks, says, does, how others perceive him/her, treat him/her, etc. Is the character static (stays the same) or dynamic (changes)? What key questions might an interviewer have for him/her?

3)Conflict Analysis. Identify the major conflict/s and be able to identify how it is developed and if it's resolved.

4)Theme and Passage. Identify the dominant theme/s of the memoir/biography and find short passage/s that illustrate/s it. Be sure to analyze how/why the passage/s illustrate the theme/s. You may have only one theme that is developed with 3 passage analyses or 2-3 themes illustrated with a passage for each. Total is 3...

All responses will be submitted to turnitin.com. Save time and register now with the class. ID #:2661114 Password:surfturk.

    HW #13

Work on your bio essay, making doubly sure to send/save yourself a backup copy just-in-case to be able to work on it next class. Aim to complete about half! Again, your essay may be between 500-1000 words. Aim to incorporate dialogue, analogy/metaphor/simile, anecdote, sensory imagery -- all to create a dominant impression of your subject and how he/she has impacted/influenced/changed/inspired/ruined you. Remember, what you choose to include (or omit) tells a lot about you!

If you were absent from Wednesday's class [Ivan, Jess], review your Bio Essay Pre-Writing Assignment and make sure you have succeeded in achieving the "right" snapshots to illustrate your dominant impression goal. Be sure to show Ms. Holze your completed Bio Essay Pre-Writing Assignment for credit and half half your essay completed for next class.

    HW #12

Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.") Write THREE differnt introductions. First choose the time (before/background, in the sig moment, or aftermath), and then choose a device (dialogue, anecdote, analogy, irony, fact -- see page 133 and following in your Models book for examples. Be sure to clearly labe the time and device for each and DEVELOP each. Remember, an intro is not just a paragraph in these types of essays....
