In Cold Blood Group Work Questions for Parts 4 & 5
You have been assigned a number. Please complete the task
that corresponds to the number you were assigned and work with your peers
assigned the same number. One person should act as typist and record the
answers the group agrees upon. As all members should be equally prepared to
respond to their assigned questioned, any member of the group will be called
upon to share with the class the group's findings. Please save a copy of your response
(with all member names clearly typed) in the V drive/ Journalism/ “Zowee! Submissions” Folder.
- Re-read
the letter Perry’s father wrote to the Kansas State Prison on Perry’s
behalf (pp. 147-152). Based on the letter, what three qualities does Perry
possess? Cite two text-based evidence quotes for each quality as support
for your claim. Please include page numbers.
- On
page 152, Capote indicates that for Perry, “the biography always set a
racing stable of emotions – self pity in the lead, love and hate running
evenly at first, the latter ultimately pulling ahead.” Based on what you
know of Perry thus far, identify what parts of the letter might evoke each
of these emotions (self-pity, love, and hate). Cite two text-based
evidence quotes for each quality as support for your claim. Please include
page numbers.
- Reread
Barbara’s letter and Willie Jay’s response (pp. 161-167). What aspects of
Willie Jay’s letter damage any possible help Barbara’s letter could have
done? Cite at least three ways with two text-based evidence quotes for
each quality as support for your claim. [You may cite from either or both
letters for each.] Please include page numbers.
- Reread
the Hickock’s and the neighbor’s account of
Dick’s past (pp. 190-197). What three qualities can you deduce that Dick
possesses from these accounts. Cite two text-based evidence quotes for
each quality as support for your claim. Please include page numbers.
- Mrs.
Johnson (Perry’s sister) reviews photos after the police leave. Reread her
“account” (via Capote’s mouth) on pages 209-214. What moments from the
past does she recall and how do these points help us understand Perry’s
character more? Please use text based evidence quotes to provide support
for your response. Please include page numbers.
Tips on citing page
numbers with quotes:
Goldilocks’
brazen entering of the three bears’ cottage illustrates her complete
self-centeredness. Everything is about her finding her what suits her best, and
she has absolutely no regard for the disrespect she shows others. “She tried
the first bowl of porridge and it was too cold, the second too hot, but the
third she found just right” (13). She spreads her germs in the bowls of three
bears in her quest to satiate her immediate needs, but never once does she
consider that she violates the homes of other living creatures.
