Feature AKA The Trend Piece
YOUR TASK:. Your mission is to identify
and research a trend you have observed in the world and expose its presence
at/impact on/ Schreiber to the rest of us. You
will write an in-depth investigative report feature that not only reveals the truth, but also makes us feel something. What
will we do? Change? (For example, your exposé might reveal Schreiber’s student
alcohol abuse problem. Will your readers think twice about their own drinking?
Will another student join SADD? Will a parent speak to their child? Or, if your

q Question Log. (25 points) 50 questions about your world that might be worthy of answering in your report.
q Editorial. (100 points) You selected a topic, had it approved, and now must write a 350-500 word position piece that persuades your reader to your point. Follow editorial format.
q Fascinating Facts. (30 points) Surf the Internet, peruse magazines, etc. Find out TEN facts about your topic. Write them down and use MLA citing to attribute your sources. (2 points for each fact + 1 point for each correctly formatted citation for each. See www.easybib.com for a no-brainer easy A.)
q Define Subcategories. (20 points) Most projects will cover some or all of the following: Background/History, Statistics, Present Status, In the News, etc.]
q Research Paper. (200 points) You will need to define at least five subtopics and research the basics. This mini-research paper (complete with sub category headers) will serve as your spine for your entire story. You will have to cite all your sources within the body using CHICAGO STYLE CITATIONS and in a bibliography. Copying g and pasting is never an option. Submitted to turnitin.com
q Survey. (100 points) Create a survey that is 10-20 questions and no more than 2 pages. These surveys will be distributed to 75 Schreiber students (by you) to aid you in your research. You must have both qualitative and quantitative questions in your survey.
q Propaganda. (100 points) Develop three pieces of propaganda that use the propaganda devices to persuade the viewer to your cause. Include a self-analysis with each.
q Tabulation: Survey Results. (50 points) Charts, graphs, tables, highlights from qualitative questions.
q Implications Paper. (50 points) Write up in narrative form a reflection on your survey results.
q Interviews. (100 points) Have notes to prove!!!!
q Two (2) local authority interviews. Interview two people who are “experts” on the topic. Be prepared!
q Three local interviews from students. These are IN DEPTH INTERVIEWS which reveal a (at least two students should be in-depth interviews)
q Three to five sound byte quotes (from surveys, classmates, etc.). These are one-liners.
q Extended feature story. (200 points) This long feature (2000+ words) will include ALL of the following:
q Research paper
q Analysis of survey results (implications) in narrative form scattered throughout your piece
q All relevant interviews
q Your bias
q Your piece elicits an emotional response from your reader
q Turnitin.com
q Interest Box. (25 points) This can be a box with contact information or a 10 step “How To” or anything else that would be relevant and of interest to you topic. This should enhance your article, be related, be interesting, and demonstrate thought and effort.

LAYOUT. (100 points based on points below) The entire
final written project must fill COMPLETE pages (no white/dead space) in the
Microsoft Publisher program you are taught. There must be at least ONE graphic per page with a caption of explanation.
Note the samples you were given; the graphics look good and make the story hold
together. Your layout must include ALL of the following:
q Submit with magazine “MODEL”; this will be your template for grading.
q The entire final feature must fill COMPLETE pages (no white/dead space); no text should be cut off (make sure that the research, interviews, etc. are included in your final presentation.
q Include 2 charts or graphs you created from the survey with caption (20 points)
q Artwork with caption or digital photo with caption (Ms. Baglio will help you capture an image if you ask nicely and schedule a time) or artwork or photos with captions (found on Internet is OK)
q Must include ALL the pieces of writing.
q Must have appropriate graphics filler for white space (even relevant clipart is OK)
