What Need Fixing Around Here?

An alien from outer space has landed on our planet. Because the alien come from a far advanced society where there are no problems, a perfect world, she has the technology, training, and know-how to help earth solve its major problems. Unfortunately, her orders dictate that she can only help start the healing and fixing, and because of time limitations, she can only address what is “alienly” possible. All at once, people from around the world start arguing that they have the most important problems that need fixing. Everyone is screaming and the alien doesn’t know who to believe. The alien phones home and is told that she should construct a panel of humans with diverse interests to figure out what are the major problems. You, Schreiber students, have been selected to serve on this panel with a group of others now assembled from around the globe.

PART I -- AS AN INDIVIUDAL, YOUR TASK:

Your first task is to identify at least two problems you see locally that you feel need fixing right here in Port (your home, neighborhood, or school). For each, explain and define the problem, and why it needs fixing. Please write your responses on the back of this paper.

Your second task is to identify at least two problems you see globally that need fixing (nationwide or worldwide). For each, explain and define the problem, and why it needs fixing.

PART II

Now assemble into the following groups:

AS A GROUP, YOUR TASK: Share your ideas and discuss them. Your group must come to a consensus on the top three problems you see in your world, and offer at least one possible solution for each. In other words, what needs to change in order for the problem to begin to go away? Please write your responses on the back of this paper.
